Rocks and valleys.

We headed out to the west Macdonnell ranges looking for a camp so we could explore a bit. We found a great spot over looking Redbank Gorge. It was great, we were camped right on the edge overlooking million year old rock formations! We walked through the gorge as well as Ormiston Gorge and the Ochre pits. Check it out.

The Ochre pits.

Camp at Redbank Gorge

What a view!

Redbank Gorge.

Enjoying life while waiting for the sun set.

Kings canyon

Having a wee rest rest after climbing 100 metres.. I'm amazed I could smile while gasping for breath!

Kings Canyon is amazing, It took over 3 hours to climb and walk through it.

You cant see, but on the edge of the ridge are about 9 back packers hanging their feet off the edge..bloody mad.

Daniel spotted this little guy on the way down, while I hung 10 out on the ledge!

Now it was time to make our way to Ularu, but we needed a permit to cross through so we pulled into Glen Helen to buy one. While I was inside to but it, James filled up with fuel, at $2.00 and wanted to fill up our water tanks. We were told that we could help ourselves to the bore water that was very salty, or buy bottled water..our tank holds 70 litres! The owner said that he has his staff pay for their water as the station keeps the water for their own use. WANKER! We only topped our fuel so we could get water. Apparently they are getting this reputation and should be avoided. A poor back packer in a wicked van pulled in with no fuel left and the pump of the unleaded was not working! I bet they charged him to stay while they fixed it!
We found a great free bush camp for the night so we could get into Ularu by lunch time. When that rock comes up over the horizon it is pretty awesome. We went straight in and spent the afternoon walking around parts of it. What amazed us that right in front of the climb is the plea from the indigenous locals why they don't want it climbed, stating one of the reasons is out of respect. This notice is in 3 languages but sadly it is ignored!
We were in awe of the magnitude of it all, very beautiful. This was something I have always wanted to see but we were unprepared for the crowds. There were more Italians here than Pittwater Pharmacy! We stayed over night and the camp ground was awful, we have been spoilt with beautiful bush camps and this was like camping in the middle of Dee Why! However, it met its purpose and we saw the sun set and rise over the big rock. Worth seeing, and we sat on top of the land cruiser with a cold beer and enjoyed the moment.

Surfing a rock formation!

Best view in the house!

What can I say.

Sun rise.

The Olgas.

After a quick walk through the Olgas, we headed out to do the next big adventure, Crossing the Simpson Desert. Stay tuned, this will be epic!
